Shhh! Listen to the Seasonal Sounds of Leverett 2016-2017

Sounds are important to us: they trigger memories; the soothe, they frighten, they annoy, and sometimes we just ignore them. What are the sounds of this season – of any season? What are the sounds that tell our story? What are the evocative sounds? What are the sounds unique to our community?

During 2016-2017 we explored these questions. Nineteen members of the community volunteered first to record sounds and then to select among the 199 recordings those that best told the story. We had two opportunities to present the sounds – first the Spring & Summer Sounds and then the Fall & Winter Sounds. It was a perfect way to listen to the sounds: the unidentified sound was played; each of us could write down or just think about that sound, the sound was identified – and then the next sound was played. The final compilation includes all four seasons.

To listen to all the sounds, to learn the 3 ways to get your own copy of the sounds, and to learn how to record more sounds.

Tribute to Gordon and Frances King, the Kings of Leverett

The Rattlesnake Gutter Trust in partnership with the Leverett Conservation Commission and the Leverett Historical Society, celebrated the contributions of Frances and Gordon King to our community during April 2017. The celebration included:

  • A month-long exhibit at the Leverett Library about this energetic couple. Click here to view the nine display panels.
  • A Leverett Trails Committee work day at The Blueberries, one of the 3 properties Gordon gave the town, and a dedication of both those properties and a memorial bench on Gordon’s covered bridge (the only covered bridge in Leverett). Click here for photographs of those events.
  • A print and digital compilation of the text and photographs in the exhibit and associated video and audio materials is available at the Leverett Library. The Leverett Historical Society, the Leverett Elementary School, and the Rattlesnake Gutter Trust also have copies of the print and digital materials.
